Then I started the Matthew/Sybil plotline and I’m pretty sure I lost a ton of readers which is kind of lame because seriously… would my epic fic for this fandom not have M/M as endgame? REALLY? I just honestly can’t see the point in resolving things too easily. Why bother if misunderstandings are cleared up and everyone does what the readers want them to do in the second chapter? It strikes me as odd that people who can enjoy S02 with all its Matthew/Lavinia and Richard/Mary content are apparently turned off by my story when the romances serve exactly the same function. Rather prescient in some ways, perhaps.

Well…in defense of those “lame” readers, not everyone pays attention to everything that’s going on in the fandom. Someone who just sees the story on FF.net might not have any reason to think that it’s anything other than a Matthew/Sybil story, even if they’ve noticed that you’ve written some M/M stories. Fanfiction writers in general write about non-canonical pairings all the time. I’m not interested in reading Matthew/Sybil stories but I could see someone writing a genuine Matthew/Sybil story, because there’s all this Carson/Hughes stuff around and I don’t understand that either.
As for enjoying S2 despite the presence of Carlisle and Lavinia…well, it’s TV and we can be pretty sure we’ll get what we want eventually, but fan fiction doesn’t have to go that way.
